Sazerac Cocktail

Originally made with Sazerac Cognac, hence the namesake, the Sazerac Cocktail is one that was born in New Orleans. Rye whiskey began to replace Cognac in the late 1800’s when grape production was threatened in France, including its famous Cognac region.

2.5 oz. Rye Whiskey

2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters

1 dash Angostura bitters

1 sugar cube

Lemon peel to garnish

In a rocks (or old-fashioned) glass, muddle sugar cube with a few dashes of water. Then add ice, rye whiskey, both bitters and stir well. In a separate, chilled glass, add a few drops of Absinthe and roll around the inside of it until its coated well. Pour out the excess Absinthe, then strain the liquid from the first glass into the one coated with Absinthe. Garnish with a lemon peel and enjoy.
