Lakers win two in a row after Swaggy P returns

The Los Angeles Lakers 98-92 win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday marked the first time this season the team has won two games in a row. Heading into Tuesday’s game at Atlanta, the Lakers were a miserable 1-9 and in last place in the Western Conference.

Two days and two wins later, the Lakers are a half game in front of the Oklahoma City Thunder for last place in the West. Although five time NBA champion Kobe Bryant continues to put up huge scoring numbers, 29 in Wednesday’s win, there has been one common denominator in the last two games, Nick Young.

Since returning from a thumb injury Tuesday against the Hawks, Young has scored 17 and 16 points respectively in the Lakers two game winning streak. However, it may be Young’s presence on defense that has sparked the Lakers two game run. Before Tuesday’s game in Atlanta, the Lakers were giving up over 110 points per game, last in the league. Since Young’s return to the lineup, that number has dropped to 103 points per game in the two wins over the Hawks and Rockets, a drastic and much needed decrease.

In a post game interview following their win versus the Rockets, ESPN’s Stan Verrett asked Kobe Bryant what was the reason for the recent two game win streak. Kobe replied, “Defensively, we’ve been doing a much better job.” He continued, “Nick, I mean Nick,” speaking of his teammate that missed the first 10 games of the season.
