Injuries postpone two major March fights

In the past 24 hours, fans of combat sports have been disappointed due to fights being postponed. In boxing, a major showdown between Keith Thurman, the WBA welterweight champion, and Shawn Porter has been postponed due to an injury suffered by Thurman in a car accident last week. The fight was scheduled for March 12.

Also, in the UFC, it was recently reported that Rafael Dos Anjos has pulled out of his March 5 fight with the charismatic Conor McGroegor. Dos Anjos pulled out of the fight with McGregor because of a foot injury.

“While it’s unfortunate that we must temporarily postpone this marquee matchup, a main event of the magnitude of Thurman versus Porter requires both fighters be healthy and at their best,” promoter Lou DiBella said. “Keith is anxious to resume training as soon he is able, and both he and Shawn are looking forward to a new fight date.”

Thurman vs. Porter is a fight that the majority of boxing fans have been looking forward to. At this point, there is no replacement date for the clash between these two top welterweights. Personally, I would like to see Dibella find an opponent for Porter on short notice so that Porter could stay busy. Porter’s last fight was a unanimous decision victory over Adrien Broner last June.

As far as McGregor goes, this is the second time in seven months that an opponent has pulled out of a bout with him. There is currently no official word from the UFC if McGregor will continue to headline the March 5 card or will a secondary opponent will step in on short notice to compete with the most popular fighter in UFC. Currently, the names that are being thrown around for a possible match-up against McGrogor now that Dos Anjos has pulled out are are Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz.
